OVERVIEW
Jeff Leve's 'best second wine of the vintage' is high praise indeed for a vintage that was the vintage of the decade until 2015. This exceptionally well priced second wine from deuxieme cru classe producer; Chateau Rauzan Segla is on song right now and will continue to be at its peak until 2025.
CRITIC REVIEWS
Chateau Rauzan Segla produce top Margaux wine and 'Segla', the little brother, is often regarded as the best second wine of the vintage in the area, and this 2014 is no exception. Right in its drinking window the 2014 is a beautiful wine and very approachable at the moment. Red and dark fruit aromas with floral and minerally hints lead onto a smooth medium-bodied palate with good forward ripe fruit flavours and polished tannins. 92 Points. James Suckling
Lovely toasty but not sweet nose. Very winning (like the 2005!). Not Margaux Lite, just Early Sprouting Margaux. Nice graphite finish. GV 16.5 Drink 2020-26’. 16.5/20 Points. Jancis Robinson
FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION
This wine would pair well with a Sunday roast, lamb or beef.
VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING
A lauded vintage until 2015 came along and still regarded as 'outstanding' by the Wine Enthusiast. 2014 started with a cool winter but bud burst went very well, a cooler summer resulted in some producers losing a percentage of their crop to rot but an Indian summer saw the remaining bunches produce gorgeous fruit even if the yields were lower than hoped for.
PRODUCER NOTES
Chateau Rauzan Segla are one of only fourteen Deuxièmes Crus in the official Bordeaux wine classification of 1855 and produce one of the most respected second wines of this illustrious group. Regarded as undeserving of their Deuxièmes Crus classification until the last couple of decades, now the grand vin of Rauzan Segla commands £100 every vintage.
